Her effort has laid bare how toxic the divide is among House Republicans even after the vote. But even opponents of the bill noted that voters’ resistance was not as passionate as the rebellion over it on Capitol Hill. “They’re very angry — it wasn’t even a close call,” Representative Chip Roy, Republican of Texas, who voted against aid for Ukraine, said after hearing from his constituents. Kenneth Kirk, 62, a resident of Newton, Iowa, arrived at a fund-raiser for Ms. Miller-Meeks headlined by Speaker Mike Johnson — who had risked his job to push through the aid — primed to rail against the money for Ukraine.
Senate Republicans block bipartisan border package, scuttling deal they had demanded from Democrats
The former Indiana congressman John Hostettler, who served in the House from 1995 to 2007 and will compete in a crowded primary on Tuesday, is looking to return to the chamber to represent the state’s eighth district. Hostettler’s allies praise him as an “America first conservative” who will help terminate financial aid to Ukraine, so his primary will also test Republicans’ embrace of isolationism, which has gained popularity in the party amid the rise of Donald Trump. But Jewish groups have criticized some of his past comments about the start of the Iraq war as antisemitic. Deeply reported insights into legislation, politics and policy from Sacramento, Washington and beyond.
In California, Republicans are divided over McCarthy’s deal to avoid government shutdown
Meantime, Vice President Kamala Harris was in Los Angeles for a rally Monday to urge Democratic voters to get to the polls. For their part, Democrats were eager to claw back four House districts they surrendered in 2020 and hope to gain more to pad their dominance in the state congressional delegation. Republicans hold only 11 of the state’s 53 seats, which drops to 52 seats next year because California’s once-soaring population growth has stalled. Seema Mehta is a veteran political writer who is covering the 2024 presidential race as well as other state and national contests. She started at the Los Angeles Times in 1998, previously covered multiple presidential, state and local races, and completed a Knight-Wallace fellowship at the University of Michigan in 2019. Generally, attendees to the weekend convention seemed more concerned with the spectacle of visiting presidential candidates or local matters than the budget battle happening across the country.
Garcia, Kamlager and Mahmood advance to general election in three California House races
Four years prior, the then-novice candidate and political groups that supported him received $20.4 million from Californians for his effort, the second-most from any state in the nation. Jordan, who owns a construction company, said that when there is a downturn or he can’t meet his budget, he lays people off. He acknowledged that a shutdown could put some Republicans in swing districts at risk. Cynthia Kaui, 28, president of San Diego Young Republicans, said the club’s members are mixed about whether to send more aid to Ukraine. Support for Ukraine is divided sharply along ideological lines, with 62% of conservatives believing the U.S. is doing too much to support the nation against Russia’s invasion, compared with just 17% of liberals, according to an ABC/Washington Post poll released this week.
Attendees at the state Republican Party convention were just as divided as their representatives in Congress. But House Speaker Kevin McCarthy had to rely on Democrats to get the bill to President Biden’s desk. At a time when pro-Palestinian protests have divided their party, Democratic leaders have had little to say about the comment from Ms. Omar.
The party settled on Ways and Means Chairman Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, who had not sought the gavel but agreed to take it. Like Johnson an era later, Hastert was a relatively quiet member of the leadership who enjoyed goodwill generally in the rank and file. Hastert was speaker through the last two Clinton years and first six of the George W. Bush presidency.

Democrats laugh off Marjorie Taylor Greene's "crazy" vote to oust Mike Johnson.
In the months to come, both parties will be investing significant resources in those races, as national attention inevitably turns west. More than a week after Election Dayand as the nation awaits an official call on which party will control the US House of Representatives, attention is turning to some of the outstanding races in California that could tip the scales. Tuesday was the last day that county election officials could accept ballots that were postmarked on or before Election Day — meaning the Golden State is just getting started counting some of those late-arriving ballots. Competitive districts are something of a rarity in heavily Democratic California and cut against its national reputation as a liberal stronghold. But pockets of conservative strength remain, even as Democrats hold a nearly 2-to-1 statewide edge in voter registrations.
He’s done the same with the National Republican Congressional Committee, House Republicans’ official campaign arm, and has brought on NRCC Chairman Richard Hudson’s (R-N.C.) former chief of staff as his new political director. Fundraiser last week brought in $4 million, and House Republicans’ online fundraising has ticked up from its nadir during the speakership fight. “You look at the map, and the majority is won or lost in California and New York. We’re not going to throw out the baby with the bathwater,” said one House GOP advisor granted anonymity to give a candid assessment of the party’s strategy. Johnson has never spent much time fundraising — he hails from a safe seat and hasn’t done much campaigning for others in past years.
Political columnist George Skelton has covered government and politics for 60 years and for The Times since 1974. Democrats simply would have gerrymandered the districts to their benefit, backed by a Democratic governor. Also growing above the state average were San Joaquin and Sacramento counties, where some middle-class Bay Area residents fled looking for affordable housing. “They could create more Latino districts in the Central Valley at the expense of Republicans,” Quinn says. “It means that minority communities need to be taken into account so they have voting power and an equal opportunity to elect a representative of their choice,” says commission spokesman Fredy Ceja.
This was a godsend to the state party, which had struggled to raise enough money to field competitive candidates in safer Democratic districts. At stake besides which congressional district gets trashed is the racial and ethnic composition of districts. Demographic shifts should result in a few more districts that Latino and Asian American candidates have a good chance of winning. Ryan, then just 45, was the youngest speaker in nearly 150 years but had already been party's vice presidential nominee on the 2012 ticket. Once he had Boehner's job, however, he experienced much the same internal strife. Ryan also had a strained relationship with then-President Donald Trump, with whom he had a falling out during the fall 2016 campaign.
His predecessor, Frederick Gillett of Massachusetts, also had the top job for less than five years. But when he left after the 1924 session, his party was still firmly in control and had just elected President Calvin Coolidge to a full term. Those eight years actually made Hastert the longest-serving Republican speaker in history. But any luster left after 2006 was lost when he went to prison for bank fraud charges stemming from hush money payments he had made to a former student he admitted to having sexually abused decades earlier. Gingrich managed to restore many of the powers of the speakership but clashed repeatedly with Clinton and even with Republican leaders in the Senate.
In a region heavily dependent on agriculture, he’s been critical of state water management and puts water and agriculture at the top of his issues list. He has also stressed his willingness to work across party lines, and promised to make improvements in public safety and education. The race was being watched nationally for what it will say about the preferences of the Asian community. Republican Rep. David Valadao has persevered in a district with a strong Democratic tilt, and now is one of two Republicans who voted to impeach Trump who could be reelected. Rollins called Calvert an extremist and placed safeguarding democracy and protecting abortion and LGBTQ rights among his priorities.

Each town handles its own 1-euro program, so we don't know exactly how many homes have been sold across Italy since the concept took off. But experts estimate the campaigns have brought in thousands of visitors who've bought cheap houses across the country. "I believe it's because the level of stress is so low and [the fact that] the community is so active that that gives them longevity." Mussomeli's 1-euro campaign has already had a positive impact by bringing more foreign investment, tourism and jobs, says Nigrelli, the town's deputy mayor. That being said, "I never felt like this wasn't the right place for me to be, and that this wasn't the right project for me to work on or community to live in," she says. "I've learned so much about my family, which has been really special for me because my father passed away when I was a senior in high school." They were now the proud owners of not one or two but three separate 1-euro properties in Mussomeli, she told him.

That's not a load of people being like, "Good on you!". That's a lot of people being like, "No, you can't do anything". I would imagine it probably has a strong effect when the generation is only 60 years ago. I sit and I'm like, "The amount of people that would want to stand where I am, two metres away from you doing this ridiculous stuff", and like having to go again because I'm laughing. There's just a way they've all eased into the reality of how it is, and I think so much stuff has gone wrong that I guess by this stage, she is just way better at dealing with stuff. I think there’ll be some sadness about the show ending and we're pleased about that, to be honest, because I'd much rather that than people turning off already, pleased that it's over. It's so rewarding and exciting to do a show that so many people love. I also think you form such a strong bond with so many people - obviously, with the cast, but also with the crew, a number of whom have been there since series one. It's just such a wonderful process. Everyone is just trying to make everyone else laugh all day long. This is something that you do every day for months on end.
The makeup artists were like, “No, she does not look like that. It’s best to go out at the top while people are still saying, “It's great”, rather than, “It's not as good as it used to be,” which can happen with some shows. The way I see it, we're a band who have made this very successful album. I want the last series to be as good as it's ever been.
The evening before, my family watched the supernatural sitcom’s final episode, and the only dry eyes in the house were mine. I met someone the other day who was showing me the tattoo on the back of her calf of Humphrey’s head. ” Then she went, “Look at the other leg” and pulled her trousers up on the other leg to reveal Humphrey’s headless body. But also, I thought, “Oh my God, what have you done? ” Recently, we went to the London Comic Con, and hundreds of people there were all dressed up as the ghosts. In television, obviously, you very rarely get to meet your audience so it was really lovely to see just how much people had taken this show to their hearts.

I get stopped on the street by fans of Ghosts who are always telling me that it's the only thing that their kids will sit down and watch with them. Usually, teenagers are in their rooms, or younger children are playing computer games, and everyone is doing things separately. But Ghosts can bring everyone together. For that reason, I really hope that people will say that it's one of the best sitcoms they’ve seen. They've become such close and good friends.
“Been there, done it, got the T-shirt, mate,” he says; the way Jim Howick delivers the line had me in an inexplicable fit of giggles. Honestly, adults-only simply meant “adult time.” To us, that equated to a lot of relaxing, listening to live music, and reading on a lounge chair with a cocktail in hand. I didn’t even notice that children weren’t on board because it just didn’t occur to me that anything should be noticed. It means that kids are not splashing in the pool and running down the corridors. Safe to say it’s also the only cruise ship at sea with its own tattoo parlour, mezcal bar and vinyl store.

The benefit to this is keeping organized, which makes unpacking so much easier, on the first day of your cruise. You may want to pack a change of clothing in your beach bag, along with your other beach day essentials. These days it’s not unusual to see some skimpier swimsuits on some people. Just remember that while walking from your stateroom to the pool and vice versa, you’ll need to wear a swim cover up. If you’re headed somewhere like Norway or Alaska where hiking is one of the most popular activities, it’s worth packing a good pair of walking boots. You may also want to buy some new items while shopping in the ship’s boutiques, so remember to leave a little extra room in your suitcase just in case.
Packing For Your Vacation Plans
During the evenings you are going to want to wear a bit more simply to stay comfortable, but can still dress casual. Temperatures drop as the sun goes down, and with the ship underway, there is always a constant breeze. Layering is critical if your destination is a bit cooler or you’re planning what to wear on a cruise to Hawaii in the breezier months. Start with a base of moisture-wicking fabrics and add layers such as cardigans, pullovers, or light jackets that you can remove or add as needed. This approach allows for seamless transitions from the calm wind on the deck to the warmer interior spaces of the ship. Embarking on a cruise entails knowing the nuances of cruise attire.
Sneakers or comfortable walking shoes
Bring a rain jacket, fleece, wick-away layers, comfortable walking shoes, and boots and gloves for glacier excursions. This could mean a cocktail dress or evening gown for women and a suit, tie, or tuxedo for men. If you need help deciding what to wear, check with your cruise line for specific guidelines and recommendations. For dinner in NCL's main dining room or more upscale specialty restaurants, collared shirts and pants or nice jeans are suggested for men (with closed-toe shoes).

For many, a cruise vacation is all about spending as much time as possible in or near the sea. Maybe this means claiming a lounge chair as your own, seeking a spot in the sand without footprints or swimming out into the clear blue water. When you're done wading in the water or soaking up the sun, a cover-up like a romper, oversized shirt or dress is always a stylish choice for wandering local shops and grabbing a seaside lunch. Quick-drying swim trunks are the go-to staple for this cruise outfit and is a perfect choice for kids.
